One teenage youth was found dead only a few days following being wrongly accused of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Finding

Kai Lloyd's parents discovered his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.

False Allegations Begin

The investigation learned how his mother got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if her son was her offspring. The communication stated: "Inform him thanks for breaking into my flat."

In a statement presented to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was false.

Law Enforcement Inquiry

An investigation report from police later determined the alleged break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the items was not taken in the beginning".

News coverage about the supposed stolen ashes attracted social media responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".

The "social media content were extremely distressing", she stated.

Mental Wellbeing Impact

She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions genuinely were important to him.

"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was not true".

Kai was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.

Withdrawal and Anxiety

His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".

When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her son told her he had gone into the house because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he wanted, but refuted taking anything.

Digital Bullying

In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the allegations.

The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old urged the teenager to end his life.

She had no concerns on the night before he died, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and joking".

She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is totally devastated".

He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, noting that he could not bear to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".

School Response

The hearing heard from educational personnel at Connah's Quay secondary school.

On 8 November, she "heard some boys discussing that the student had been detained and that was the initial I learned".

"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.

After the conversation, the educator said she rang the family's parents' telephone and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.

The court heard his parents said they did not receive that message.

Formal Finding

Lead investigator told the hearing he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Providing a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.

"Likely untruths were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.

"On November 11th, he was questioned by the police and following his interview he was freed while investigations proceeded."

The coroner determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or omissions of any organization led to or added to his passing and although it was the result of a personal action it is impossible to determine his intent."
