Students Express Anxieties That Artificial Intelligence Is Weakening Their Study Skills, Research Shows

As per recent research, students are voicing fears that employing artificial intelligence is weakening their capability to engage academically. Numerous state it makes schoolwork “too easy”, while a portion say it limits their creativity and impedes them from acquiring new skills.

Widespread Use of AI Among Learners

An analysis looking at the utilization of artificial intelligence in UK schools revealed that just 2% of learners between the ages of 13 and 18 stated they did not use artificial intelligence for their academic tasks, while the vast majority said they frequently used it.

Unfavorable Influence on Skills

Despite AI’s popularity, 62% of the learners reported it has had a negative effect on their abilities and growth at school. A quarter of the participants concurred that AI “enables me to obtain answers with minimal personal effort”.

An additional 12% said artificial intelligence “hinders my original thought”, while comparable figures reported they were less inclined to address issues or compose originally.

Nuanced Understanding Among Students

A specialist in AI technology commented that the research was one of the initial to examine how young people in the Britain were incorporating artificial intelligence into their learning.

“I am particularly impressed by the nuanced understanding displayed,” the professional said. “When a majority of pupils voice concerns that AI fosters replication instead of independent work, it reflects a mature comprehension of educational goals and the technology’s potential risks and rewards.”

The professional added: “Young people who are using this technology actually have a pretty sophisticated, quite mature understanding of what the technology does in relation to their schoolwork, which is fascinating because we don’t give young people enough credit when it comes to using technology in an educational space, unaided, in this way.”

Research-Based Analyses and Additional Worries

The discoveries are consistent with empirical analyses on the usage of artificial intelligence in academics. A particular study evaluated neural responses during written assignments among students using large language models and concluded: “These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI’s role in learning.”

Almost 50% of the two thousand pupils surveyed expressed they were anxious their fellow students were “secretly using AI” for academic work without their educators being able to identify it.

Desire for Support and Favorable Aspects

Numerous students reported that they sought more guidance from teachers for the proper use of AI and in evaluating whether its results was accurate. An initiative designed to supporting educators with AI education is being launched.

“Some of these findings will be very interesting for teachers, especially around how much students are expecting guidance from teachers. We sometimes think there is a technological generational divide, and yet they are still looking at their teachers for guidance in how to use this technology productively, and I find that very positive,” the expert said.

A school leader commented: “The findings closely reflect what I see in school. Many pupils recognise AI’s value for creativity, revision, and problem-solving but often use it as a shortcut rather than a learning tool.”

Just 31% said they didn’t think utilizing AI had a adverse influence on any of their skills. Yet, the majority of students said using AI helped them develop new skills, for instance 18% who said it helped them comprehend problems, and 15% who stated it helped them produce “original and superior” concepts.

Learner Perspectives

Upon further inquiry, a 15-year-old female pupil remarked: “My comprehension of mathematics has improved, and AI assists me in tackling complex problems.”

Meanwhile, a young man of age 14 stated: “My cognitive speed has increased compared to before.”
